The presentation was entitled: "Assessment of human health risks and toxicity associated to particles (10, 2.5, and 1), organic pollutants, and heavy metals nearby cement plants".
Dr. Jaume Folch, researcher in TecnATox, has recently published his third book entitled "El naufragi dels records. Què hi ha darrere de malalties com l'Alzheimer?" (The shipwreck of memories. What is behind Alzheimer disease?).
The book is about how the new advances in the understanding of the disease allow us to determine the origin and to influence on their prevention through diet or physical exercise, among others. You can find more information in the URV digital press release.

TecnATox celebrated the annual workshop and strategic plan meeting on May 31 in the School of Medicine and Health Science.
PhD students presented their project thesis during the first half of the morning. After the coffee break, the strategic plan meeting was carried out. Upcoming objectives of the group were discussed and actions were defined.
The doctoral programme in Nanosciences, Materials and Chemical Engineering organises a day in which doctoral students have the opportunity to discuss their work and have it evaluated by a prestigious panel of experts during a platform and a poster exhibition sessions.

Prof. Josep Lluís Domingo has recently been interviewed in betevé. He talked about the high concentrations of dioxins reported in the surroundings of the municipal waste incinerator located in Sant Adrià del Besos (Barcelona). He asks for immediate measures to reduce the emissions of dioxins in the aforementioned facility, which were found up to 2.3 times the acceptable threshold.

TecnATox practiced two field investigations in the vicinity of Besòs incinerator in 2014 and 2017. These studies pointed to an increased risk of cancer in inhabited areas near the plant, the that more waste burns in Catalonia with about 400,000 tons per year. The concern that caused in neighboring neighborhoods, with some 56,000 neighbors, impacted on the platform Aire Net, which has denounced before the Prosecutor alleged illegalities to hide the pollution that blames the plant. The alarm has forced the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) and the City Council of the capital -owners of the public company Tersa, which manages the installation- to commission new studies.

Dr. Jaume Folch is investigating the origin of Alzheimer disease in collaboration with the Universitat de Barcelona. Several studies carried out with animal models show that diet is a key factor for the occurrence of the most common type of such dementia. Specifically, the diabetes during adulthood (type 2 diabetes) would be a determining factor leading to neuronal death and the characteristic memory loss of Alzheimer.

María Ángeles Martínez, Raju Prasad, Dr. Joaquim Rovira, Dr. Vikas Kumar and Prof. Marta Schuhmacher have created a mathematical model to quantify the transferred amount of bisphenol A from pregnant women to fetus. This method has been tested with 100 pregnant women to know the fate and behavior of bisphenol A in their body and to study the impact on baby's health in the future.

On November 21st, the EPAA partners met to build synergies on the development and acceptance of Toxicokinetics and read‐across. Held at the Renaissance Brussels Hotel, the EPAA Partners Forum brought together 33 expert participants from industry and EC, along with selected representatives from regulatory agencies and invited researchers from two large EU‐funded projects (EuroMix and EUToxRisk). Dr. Vikas Kumar from University of Rovira I Virgili (Spain) represented the EuroMix project in this meeting. Dr. Kumar presented “Toxicokinetics and read across in EuroMix” and discussed how research in EuroMix is helpful for the wider stakeholders and why collaboration is necessary for the society. The Partners Forum held on 2st of November 2017 was part of the EPAA undertakings to address one of 6 challenges as a priority: to Improve intra and inter sectorial collaboration and coordination.
EPAA is a very relevant platform to build synergies across sectors, given its multi‐sectoral structure encompassing different business sectors. Besides exchanging information between sectors about their respective research agendas and activities in the sectorial flagship initiatives, the event was meant as an opportunity for the partners to identify possibilities for synergies, table feedback and scientific input in EPAA. Discussions revolved around 4 balanced sessions aiming at covering the whole spectrum of stakeholders working on TK and read‐across: regulators, the regulated, method developers and downstream users.
At the end of the day, a scientific consensus was achieved on the following four items:
• TK data play an important role in risk assessment across all industry sectors and are subject to significant research effort by all relevant stakeholders
• TK data strengthen the read across weight of evidence; TK data should ideally be anchored towards human relevance, preferably generated using in silico and in vitro tools
• Identification and characterization of Metabolism is a key component of TK assessment in readacross
• The forum expressed confidence that significantly more progress in TK can be made if collaboration between sectors is enhanced and synergies are captured.
Specifically, the participants recommended 3 actions to tackle the use of TK and read‐across methods:
– ACTION 1: Advocate for a TK speciality section within Eurotox
– ACTION 2: Produce and manage a shopping list of open tools (open source, EPAA controlled)
– ACTION 3: Support the dissemination and training event on RVIS planned in early 2019 with TK stakeholders
The participants’ discussion was captured by a scientific writer and a scientific publication is currently under preparation.

The main goal of SEAFOODTOMORROW is to strengthen the seafood production and processing industry in Europe by providing validated market-driven and consumer-responsive eco-innovative sustainable solutions that contribute to food security, mitigate production hazards, contribute to employment and increase consumer awareness of seafood quality and safety. The role of TecnATox will be focused on Risk Assessment (WP3), Life Cycle Assessment (WP4), and the improvement of Fishchoice: a consumer benefit-risk communication tool already developed in ECsafeSEAFOOD project (WP6).

Laura Trabalón will defend her doctoral thesis next Monday, 6th November 2017, at 11.30h in Sala de Graus, Faculty of Chemistry, Universitat Rovira i Virgili.
Title: "Seafood as a dietary source of emerging organic contaminants. A case-study in Tarragona County, Spain".
Supervisors: Dr. Eva Pocurull Aixalà, Dr. Francesc Borrull Ballarin, Dr. Martí Nadal Lomas.
This thesis has been performed in the framework of ECsafeSEAFOOD (2013-2017).
Dr. Vikas Kumar, director of Systems Toxicology area, will participate in the panel discussion of European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) meeting on "Toxicokinetics and read across: Finding synergies for 3Rs". The overall aim is the replacement, reduction and refinement (3Rs) of animal use in regulatory testing. It will be held in Brussels on November 21, 2017.
TecnATox is managing the course Environmental epidemiology in Tarragona County, organized by Mare Terra Fundació Mediterrània. It will take place on November 16th in "sala d'actes" from "Autoritat Portuària de Tarragona".
This year is a significant milestone, since the first edition was held 25 years ago. The price of the course is 25 euros, although it is free for students and unemployed.

Prof. Marta Schuhmacher, Dr. Vikas Kumar and Dr. Joaquim Rovira are currently participating in the HEALS annual meeting. It is taking place in the island of San Servolo, Venice, Italy, from 22th till the 25th October 2017.
There are two main goals of the meeting: 1) to follow up the research activity performed during the last year; and 2) to explain the research plan for the following year.
Last week, Prof. Marta Schuhmacher was in the POPs management International Workshop, National Implementation Plan - NIP Review and Update of the Stockholm Convention on POPs Project. It was held in Bogotá (Colombia), on 12th and 13th October 2017. As a wide recognized expert on Environmental Risk Assessment, she gave two talks:
Risks: International Experiences on risks assessment associated with unintentional POPs.
BAT and BEP Case Studies: UPOPs risk assessment recommendations.
As a part of the dissemination plan, TecnATox researchers are encouraged to communicate their last findings to both scientific and general population.
